My Review

The story was narrated by 3 persons: Sloan, Asa, and Carter. It was a first-person narration. Even if there are three of them who speak in the story, it didn’t destroy the flow of the story. Instead, it helps on telling the readers of what the story is about and where it is going.

Most of the scene takes place in Asa’s house. The house is like a drug den and it is where Asa’s make some of his transactions. The first kiss and the love scene between Sloan and Carter also happen there. And, of course, don’t forget where Carter’s cover was blown up.

“Worries flow from her lips like the random words that flow from her fingertips. I reach out and try to catch them, clenching them in my fists, wanting nothing more than to catch them all.” ― Colleen Hoover, Too Late

Colleen Hoover created this one that gives a lot of meaning to love. On Sloan’s part, love was about sacrifice. Her love for her brother made her stay with Asa even if she doesn’t want to. Asa’s love was possessive and already hurtful for Sloan. He’ll do everything he can just to make sure that Sloan was all his. Then there’s Carter who has a genuine love for Sloan.

The genre of this literature was Romance. Comparing it to the other books that I’d read before, this one was darker and contain serious topics like drugs and sex.

“He unclenched his fists and dropped her worries, unable to catch them for her. But she picked them back up and dusted them off. She wants to be able to hold them herself now.” ― Colleen Hoover, Too Late

This novel was written by Colleen Hoover, one of the NYT bestselling authors. This story was the first one I have read that was written by her and I’m looking forward to reading more of her works. I can’t discuss the difference of this story to her other novels because just like what I had said, this is my first time to read a book written by her. But, according to my friends who love her stories, this is just like November 9 but just a little bit darker and heavy compared to her other books.

The story was about Sloan, a college girl, which has been trapped in a relationship with Asa, an abusive boyfriend and at the same time, a drug dealer. She wants to go out of that situation but unfortunately, she can’t because Asa is the only one who can help her as of the moment. He was the one who took her in his house when she has nowhere to go to and he is the one who is supporting her brother’s care who is mentally disabled. When she met Carter, her classmate, and seatmate in her Spanish class, she can’t deny that she felt attracted to him and Carter felt the same way too towards her. What they don’t know, it is just the start of everything. Asa’s love for Sloan will make it hard for all of them. Sloan and Carter will go through Asa’s first before they can be with each other.

“and that’s where love finds you… in the tragedies.” ― Colleen Hoover, Too Late

I liked this story even though I’m not into books that have an abusive scene. I like how Asa was portrayed. Asa is the possessive badass boyfriend to Sloan, who thinks that Sloan couldn’t live without him. Colleen did very well to make him look hateful in the story but you’ll also love him because of how great his love for Sloan. But, everything that is too much is not good that’s why even if he loves Sloan so much, he wasn’t aware that he was already hurting her and that leads her from turning away from him and realizing that the love she has for Asa is not even real.

I sort of dislike the story too because Sloan was described to be tough but what I saw was there was no any development from her, only on the last part where she finally said what she wants to happen to Asa and their relationship. Carter too didn’t have any development from the start until the very end. The way I meet his character, it was just the same until the end. What I mean is that I don’t know much about him unlike Asa, I know the reason why he acts like that and why he was like that to Sloan.

“You don’t love him. You’re still here – not because you’re too weak to leave – but because you’re too strong to leave. You put up with this shit because you know it’s not about you. It’s not about your own safety. You do it for your brother. Everything you do, you do for other people. Not many people have that kind of courage and strength, Sloan. It’s fucking inspiring.” – Colleen Hoover, Too Late

The story was good but the ending was a little bit incomplete. I felt like there was something more missing. I think that’s because I wasn’t able to know the characters more and only Asa was the one I fully understand the story. The character development between Sloan and Carter was a little bit not that good. It was like how we meet them from the start was just the same as how they are until the very end.

I encourage those who love something dark to try reading this one. But, I am not allowing younger people to read this because it contains topics and scenes not appropriate for their age.

Thankfully, you can read this on Wattpad. Yes, that means that this story is free and no payment is needed to be able to read this. But, of course, except that this one is only an e-book and there’ll be no physical book unless Miss Colleen decided to publish this story. The author decided to publish this book and it’s no more available on Wattpad.
